A Review of SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS

Elizabeth McGovern is at her most enchanting as the dyingest princess in all of folk-taledom in the Faerie Tale Theatre production of SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS.

Shelly Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre was a cable program in the 80's which recreated a wide variety of traditional folk tales in an accessible and entertaining way, employing many high-profile entertainers. Many of the episodes remain popular on video.
The Faerie Tale Theatre production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs stars Elizabeth McGovern as Snow White, Vanessa Redgrave as the evil queen and Vincent Price as the mirror. True to the series, it is tongue-in-cheek and playful, short and to-the-point. Kids will enjoy the easy-to-follow story line, while adults will like such clever little gags as faerie tale dwarfs chiding each other for making unwarranted assumptions. Redgrave has a ball going over the top in high style as the vain witch-queen. Price turns in an understated, extremely effective performance as the fickle, troublemaking mirror. They are both enormously entertaining. The dwarfs do their thing, and Rex Smith, God help us, intervenes to whisk Snow White off to his castle.

One bed was too soft and one bed was ... whoops, wrong tale.
What can one say about Elizabeth McGovern as Snow White? It is not much of a reach for an actress of her caliber to play a pure, wide-eyed innocent, and she fulfills the role effortlessly. More notable about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is that Ms. McGovern is at her most exquisitely lovely. She is a veritable living image of a doe-eyed Celtic colleen. At every turn she is more serenely beautiful. I defy anyone to watch this little program and not fall for Elizabeth McGovern!

Ahem. Overall, light entertainment, as one would expect, but fun and well-crafted. Duvall puts in a cameo as the queen who is, er, pricked and has Snow White nine months later. Recommended.
